April is Youth Month at Heritage!
Over the next 4 weeks, Heritage Credit Union is offering raffles, games and other fun prizes designed to help your children sharpen their personal finance skills. Bring your kids in to your local branch to find out what we can do for you and your family. Our youth month program is part of a larger effort hosted annually by the Credit Union National Association.
Fact: During last year’s national credit union youth month, 125,188 young members deposited more than $23.5 million dollars into their savings accounts – with 8,420 of those being new accounts.
It pays to learn about money at an early age! A simple way to teach your kids the Save, Spend, Give approach:
A great way to teach children smart money habits is to introduce them to an easy-to-use budgeting system that divides up their money into three important areas: saving, spending and giving. It’s as simple as labeling three jars and making sure they contribute some of their money to each one.
Savings jar: This allows your child to budget for more expensive purchases. Has your child been eyeing a new, shiny bike? Help them figure out how much they will need to save over what amount of time. This approach is a great way to practice patience and reward.
Giving jar: Whether you want to introduce your children to the importance of charitable giving or use this jar as a way to help pay for birthday presents for friends and siblings, it’s important for them to understand that a little money can go a long way in making someone else happy.
Spending jar: This is the instant fun jar that should be used to make purchases, you can even take the spending jar to the store…just make sure they put money into the other two jars beforehand!
Using the 3 jar method of budgeting gives your child a sense of control of their money while encouraging parents to help them budget and plan for the future. For more information on this savings idea, follow the link at the bottom of the page.
