Gas Saving Tips
Buy gas from busy stations
Gas stations that are used more regularly are more likely to have fuel that is fresh and fresh fuel has more power than gas that has been sitting around.
Avoid gas stations near freeways
You are paying for the convenience. Stations further away from the freeway tend to have better prices.
Buy gas during the coolest part of the day
The gas is denser during the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Since gas is denser in the cooler weather and gas is measured in volumes you will get more in your measure of volume.
Fill up on weekdays
Since many people travel on weekends the price of gas will rise with the demand. To get the best price try and fill up before 10am on Thursdays. Many station owners change their prices around 10am.
Avoid filling the gas tank to the top
Not only could this cause overfilling of your tank and gas sloshing over, the pump doesn't have enough time to really activate and may overcharge you for the gas received.
Drive sensibly
Speeding, rapid accelerating and braking wastes gas. Driving sensibly can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and 5 percent around town.
Fuel Economy benefit: 5-33%
Equivalent Gas Savings: $0.16 - $1.06 per gallon
Avoid running on empty
Your vehicle will run less efficiently when your car is on empty, actually using more gas.
Remove excess weight
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle could reduce your miles per gallon by up to 2%
Slow down
Slowing down or speeding up wastes fuel. When exceeding 40 miles per hour, it forces your vehicle to overcome tremendous wind resistance.
Keep it straight
Use alternative roads when safer, shorter or straighter. Compare traveling distances - but remember to take into consideration that corners, curves and lane jumping requires extra gas.
Automatic transmissions should be allowed to cool
If you are sitting at a standstill, e.g. a railroad crossing, long traffic lights, etc. place gear into neutral position, this reduces transmission strain and allows transmission to cool.
Park ready to go
Park your car so that you can later begin to travel in forward gear; avoid reverse gear maneuvers to save gas.
